Baseball Sweeps DH at Richland College

After a winter storm last week that resulted in the cancellation of four games, the Vernon College baseball team returned to action yesterday by winning both games of a double header at Richland College. 

 

Game 1 Recap

After a slow opening day at the plate, the Chaparral bats came alive with 12 hits to win game one of the double header 17-7. The power potential of this lineup was witnessed with 10 of the 12 hits going for extra bases - 4 doubles and 6 homeruns. 

Sergio Ortiz (Yabuccoa, PR) delivered the first blast with a 2 out, 2-run homerun, in the top of the 2nd to put the Chaps up 4-0. The spark by Ortiz carried over to the 3rd inning as the offense erupted with 8 runs on six hits. Zak Skinner (Melbourne, Australia), lead the inning off with a solo homerun. Jayden Hill (Frisco, TX) and Cole Miears (Kerrville, TX) both followed with 3-run homeruns each. 

Skinner and Chris Estrada (Carolina, PR) lead the offense with 3 hits a piece while Miears platted 4 runs.  Alvaro Espinal (Attleboro, MA) also hit a homerun while reaching base 4 out of 5 plate appearances.

On the mound, Ryan Avalos (San Angelo, TX) shut down a Richland rally in the 3rd and went  4 innings with 0 earned runs and 6 k's to earn the win, 

 

Game 2 Recap - 

The Chap offense once again broke out with a big 2nd inning, this time with 11 runs. 

With two outs and one run already on the board, the lineup roled off 6 hits to plate 10 runs. Sergio Ortiz started the rally once again with a single and was followed by a single from Alvaro Espinal and a double by Cole Miears. After a walk and two errors, the scoring outburst wrapped up with singles from Jayden Hill and Tyler Daniels (Arlington, TX) and a double by Isaac Davila (Austin, TX)

The 11 runs were enough as Brandon Smith (Lubbock, TX) and Nico Yglesia (Valencia, Venezueala) shut down the Richland offense out of the pen as the Chaps completed the double header sweep with an 11-6 win.
