Baseball Sweeps Series With Redlands

The Vernon College baseball team swept a road series at Redlands College this past weeekend with scores of 13-8, 13-6, and 14-3. The wins extended the Chaparrals winning streak to five games and bring their season record to 5-2. In total, the Chaps scored 40 runs on 28 hits in only 21 innings. The pitching staff was just as impressive striking out 32 batters and holding the Redlands hitters to a .211 average. 

Game 1 Recap

Marcos Escalera (Canovanas, PR) took the mound to start the series and set the tone for the weekend. The right handed pitcher went four innings allowing only one run on three hits and six strikeouts. 

The offense scored two runs in the top of the first highlighted by a leadoff triple by Alvaro Espinal (Attleboro, MA) and an rbi single by Cole Miears (Kerrville, TX). The Chaps produced a consistent offense scoring in each of the fist 6 innings of the game. The breakout inning was a 5 run third inning that saw the Chaps send 9 hitters to the plate with rbi singles by Sergio Ortiz (Yabuccoa, PR) and Zak Skinner (Melbourne, Australia). After the big third inning, the offense continued to roll racking up 11 hits and 4 extra base hits. Pierre Planes (Lauzerville, France) and Dillon Flores (Lewisville, TX) each contributed doubles while Miears mashed an opposite field homerun. 

Chase Senecal (Jupiter, FL) and Brandon Smith (Lubbock, TX) pitched the final five innings out of the pen racking up a combined seven strikeouts while holding the Cougars to two earned runs. 

 

Game 2 Recap

The bats stayed hot on Saturday jumping out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first on a two-out bases loaded single by Tyler Daniels (Arlington, TX). The scoring consistency continued from Friday with the Chaps scoring in 6 of the 7innings. Daniels lead the way going 3 for 5 at the plate with three rbi's. Skinner, Espinal, and Ortiz had two hits a piece. The Chaps belted out 12 hits to take a 13-1 lead heading in to the bottom of the seventh. 

On the mound, the Chaps received another quality start this time by Jarek Woodward (Seattle, WA) who went 4 innings with 0 earned runs, 9 strikeouts, and only 4 hits allowed. Tyler Coakley (Burlington, Ontario) and Mason Muller (New Diana, TX) closed things out in the pen to secure a 13-6 win. 

 

Game 3 Recap

The Chaps completed the weekend sweep with a 14-3 win in the second game of Saturday's double header. The offensive outburst was lead by Daniels, Ortiz, and Espinal each producing two rbi's. 

Lilian Amoros (Paris, France) delived the third quality start for the Chaps going 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 2 hits and 5 strikeouts. Ryan Avalos (San Angelo, TX) delivered his second quality appearance out of the pen this week to close out the final two innings of the five-inning game decided by run rule.
