Baseball Splits Double Header at Frank Phillips

The Vernon College baseball team split a double header at Frank Phillips College over the weekend winning the first game 10-3 and losing the second game 14-10

 

Game 1 Recap

Ryan Avalos (San Angelo, TX) took the mound for the Chaps and delivered a quality start by going three innings and allowing only 1 earned run. Brandon Smith (Lubbock, TX) and Nico Yglesia (Austin, TX) came on in relief and blanked the Plainsmen the rest of the way. In total, the Chap hurlers allowed only 8 hits and held Frank Phillips scoreless for the final five innings of the game. 

After failing to score the first two innings, the offense broke lose in the 3rd scoring 6 runs. The Chaps went on to score 10 runs on 12 hits with 2 doubles and 3 homeruns. Pierre-Emmanuel Planes (Lauzerville, France) lead the way going 3 for 4 at the plate while Zak Skinner (Melbourne, Australia) delivered the big hit in the 6 run inning with a grand slam. 

 

Game 2 Recap

In the second game of the double header, the Chaps built a 7-3 lead through the midway point of the game but it wasn't enough to hold off a late rally by the Plainsmen. 

Zak Taylor (Aubrey, TX) took the ball to start the game and delivered another quality start that helped the Chaps builld an early lead. Taylor went 4.1 innings and struck out 5 while only walking 1 and allowing 6 hits. 

The offense pounded out 17 hits including three hits a piece by Planes, Alvaro Espinal (Attleboro, MA), and Sergio Ortiz (Yabuccoa, Puerto Rico). Tyler Daniels (Arlington, TX) and Ashton Smith (Glen Rose, TX) each belted home runs while Elvis Rumaldo (Canovanas, Puerto Rico), Skinner, and Espinal each recorded a double. 

Two big innings by Frank Phillips in the 6th and the 7th proved to be the deciding factor as the Chaps fell 14-10.
