Chaparrals Sweep Redlands

Chaparrals Sweep Redlands

The Vernon College baseball team swept Redlands College this past weekend to improve to 7-1 on the year.

Game 1

The Chaps won game 1 by a score of 12-2. Noah Lindt (Bonn, Germany) was sharp on the mound and set the tone for the game and the series. The freshman went 4.2 innings while giving up 0 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 8. Shafer Glasscock (Jourdanton, TX) came on in relief and went the final 1.1 innings while giving up only 1 hit.

The offense battled a stiff wind that was blowing in but still managed to pound out 14 hits, 3 for extra bases. The offense was lead by Jayden Hill (Frisco, TX) and Christian Febus (Salinas, PR) who each went 3 for 4 with a double and 2 rbi's. Kylar Galmor (Lubbock, TX) and Sergio Ortiz (Yubucoa, PR) each contributed 2 hits and a stolen base.

Game 2

The offense stayed hot at the plate in game 2 scoring in 3 of their four innings in the run-ruled shortened game as the Chaps won 15-1. The Chaps produced the 15 runs on 9 hits with 5 of them for extra bases. Zak Skinner (Melbourne, Australia) went 2 for 3 with a grand slam. Travis Bragg (San Leon, TX) was 2 for 2 with 2 doubles and 4 rbi.

Brandon Smith (Lubbock, TX) earned the complete game win on the mound. The sophomore rhp went 5 innings and 0 earned runs while giving up only 2 hits and striking out 6.

Game 3

The Chaps found themselves in a different environment in game three as they grinded out a win in a low scoring pitchers dual, 4-3.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st, Jayden Hill delivered on a bases load double that cleared the bases and put the Chaps up 3-1. Redlands would respond with runs in the 2nd and 4th to tie the game at 3-3. Travis Bragg led off the bottom of the 4th with a double to left center. With 2 outs, Sergio Ortiz delivered on a single to right field on an 0-2 count to score Bragg and take the lead.

The one run lead would be enough as the Chaparral bullpen was tremendous and shut down the Redlands offense. Josh Ashen (Melbourne, Australia) was first in relief and went 2 innings while giving up only 1 run and striking out 2. Cristian Hernandez (Springtown, TX) pitched the final 3 innings giving on 0 runs and 0 hits while striking out 6.

Game 4

Game 4 started in a similar fashion to game 3 as the Chaparrals were tied 2-2 after 3 innings of play. The offense pushed a run across in the 4th to break the tie and then erupted for 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th as the Chaps went on to win by a 10-2 margin.

Jayden Hill was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and a triple. Sergio Ortiz also had 2 hits and produced 2 rbi's and 2 stolen bases. Jean-Benoit Simard Gagnon (Saguenay, Quebec) also had 2 hits and plated 3 runs.

On the mound, Ty Cunningham (Iowa Park, TX) got the start and went 4 innings and gave up 0 earned runs on 1 hit with 5 strikeouts. Isaiah Naylor (Friendswood, TX) continued the dominant work out of the pen for the Chaps going the final 3 innings while giving up 0 runs on 2 hits and 5 strikeouts.
