Baseball Wins Series Against Clarendon

The Vernon College baseball team won three of four games against Clarendon College this past weekend to improve to 10-2 on the year.

Gm. 1  Win 4-1

Noah Lindt (Bonn, Germany) got the start on the mound and was dominant through 5 innings. The freshman allowed 0 runs and only 2 hits while striking out 8. Shafer Glasscock (Jourdanton, TX) came on in relief and pitched the final 2 innings allowing only 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 2. After 6 shutout innings to start the game, the lone run allowed came on back to back hits to start the 7th. Glasscock was able to retire the next three batters in a row and secure the series opening win. 

Game 1 was a typical pitchers duel with hits for both teams hard to come by. The Chaps had only 4 hits in the game but was able to maximize each one to produce 4 runs. Zak Skinner (Melbourne, Australia) singled home the first two runs of the game on a two out hit to right center. Christian Hernandez (Springtown, TX) returned to the lineup after missing time due to an injury and plated the other two runs on a 2 rbi single to left field in the 5th. 

 

Gm. 2  Loss 16-14

The atmosphere changed to a slugfest in game 2 that saw Clarendon score a run in the 8th and 9th to secure the win.

Clarendon jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 4 run inning in the top of the 3rd. The Chaparrals responded in the bottom of the 3rd with a big 7 run inning. The Chaps extended their lead to 10-4 in the 4th. However, that lead would not last as the Bulldogs rallied to score in each of the final 5 frames highlighted by a 5 run 7th. 

Dylan Garcia (Fort Worth, TX) lead the offense going 3 for 5 with 2 homeruns, a double, and 6 rbi's. Skinner, Jayden Hill (Frisco, TX), and Christian Febus (Salinas, PR) each had two hits in the game. 

 

Gm 3  Win 14-5

On a cold and windy day in Clarendon, the Chaparrals jumped out to an early lead scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st. The lineup was able to produce runs in 5 of the 7 innings as they pounded out 14 hits. Travis Bragg (San Leon, TX) went 3 for 4 with a homerun and a double scoring 3 runs and producing 3 RBI's. Zak Skinner also had three hits, 2 of them going for doubles, with 2 rbi's and 4 runs scored. Jayden Hill had 2 hits including a homerun and 4 rbi's. Dylan Garcia also had 2 hits with 2 rbi's and 2 runs scored.

Ryan Lawton (Flower Mound, TX) got the start and was sharp in the cold going 4.1 innings allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 7. Trae Kizlinski (Euless, TX) closed out the final 2.1 innings with a very efficient performance needing just 18 pitches to get 7 outs.

 

Gm. 4  Win 18-14

The offense stayed consistent in game 4 for the Chaps as they were able to score in 6 of the 7 innings building a 16-5 lead through 5.5 innings. The Bulldogs continued to fight and scored 3 runs in the 6th and 6 runs in the 7th before Ty Sansom (Weatherford, TX) recorded the final out to secure the series win. 

Travis Bragg led the offensive charge in game 2 going a perfect 6 for 6 at the plate. The freshman had 3 doubles, a home run, 4 rbi's and scored 4 runs. On the day, Bragg went an impressive 9 for 10 at the plate with 6 extra base hits. 

Dylan Garcia, Zak Skinner, and Jayden Hill each had two hits in the game and produced 7 runs as a group. 

Ty Cunningham (Iowa Park, TX) got the start and went 4 innings allowing only 2 earned runs. Trae Kizlinski pitched the next 2.2 innings before Sansom closed out the final out of the game.
