Baseball Season Recap

The Vernon College baseball team finished the 2023 season with a 26-27 record. The 26 wins are the most wins the program has had in over 15 years. 

"I'm very proud of how this group over came adversity this year" said head coach Devin McIntosh. "We have a very strong group of freshman returning next year and I'm excited about buidling on the positives of this season."

Hitter Of The Year

Zak Skinner (Melbourne, Australia) was selected as the hitter of the year for the second consecutive season. Skinner lead the team in all but one offensive statistical category. The sophomore finished the year with a .447 average with 21 2B, 2 3B, and 10 HR. Skinner slugged .737 and had a .511 on base percentage all while striking out less than he walked. Skinner was selected first team all-conference catcher and all-region. 

 

Pitcher of the Year

Ryan Lawton (Flower Mound, TX) was selected as the pitcher of the year. Lawton led the Chaps in innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts, and wins. The freshman posted a 6-3 record as a starting pitcher with a 3.78 ERA. Lawton racked up 72 strikeouts in 64 innings. 

 

Newcomer of the Year

Travis Braggg (San Leon, TX) was selected as the newcomer of the year. The freshman hit .354 in 49 games with a team leading 23 doubles, 8 HR, and 42 RBI. Bragg slugged .640 and finished with a .468 on base percentage. The 23 doubles were good enough to finish 9th in the country.

 

Coaches Award

Jayden Hill (Frisco, TX) was selected to receive the coaches award. Hill finished his sophomore season with a .313 average with 15 2B, 2 3B, and 9 HR. Along with his success on the field, Hill was one of the leaders on the team and a fan favorite.
