Chaps Sweep the Week

In two game series the week of 9/13, the Chaps were able to go 5-0 while tallying 62 runs over 32 innings played. Freshmen Kelsye Loughman was the standout with homeruns both Wednesday and Saturday to open her collegiate playing career.  

 

Wednesday 9/17: 

  In 14 innings of play versus Western TX College (NJCAA Div-1), the Chaps worked through various scenarios and play for the first time since March 13 of this year.  Leading the way were Tatum Trester and Jenna Sepeda with 3 hits each on the day.  Over the course of the day the Chaps amassed 70 hits, 32 runs and 13 stolen bases. On the defensive side of the ball, the pitching staff allowed only 8 hits, with 20 strikeouts and 0 earned runs (3 unearned).  Laynie Bastow led the way with 9 strikeouts in 6 innings of work, Kaila Eastburn had 6 strikeouts in just 4 innings, and freshman Laynie Brown made her Wade Kirk Debut with 5 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched.  

 

Saturday 9/19:

  The Chaps faced Texas Glory Fort Worth for a 3 game series on Saturday at Wade Kirk Field winning all 3, 12-1, 5-1 and 13-1 respectively. In game one, the Chaps sailed to an easy victory over Texas Glory FTW.  In the first inning, the offense got started when an error scored one run for Vernon College Softball. Chaps hitters contributing to the big inning included Lexi MillsStonie Carrillo, and Adrianna Cooney, who all drove in runs.  Kaila Eastburn was the winning pitcher for Vernon College Softball. She allowed three hits and one run over six innings, striking out eight and walking zero.

  After taking a late lead in the game 2. The game was tied at one with Vernon College Softball batting in the bottom of the fourth when Kaia Hernandez tripled on a 0-2 count, scoring three runs.  Texas Glory FTW opened up scoring in the first inning, when Kelsey Valo singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.  The Chaps evened things up at one in the bottom of the first inning.  In the fourth inning pulled away for good with four runs. In the fourth Jenna Sepeda singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.  Laynie Brown was the winning pitcher for Vernon College Softball. She went five innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out six and walking zero.  Vernon College Softball had seven hits in the game. Adrianna Cooney and Logan Menzies each collected two hits to lead Vernon College Softball.

  In game 3, Kelsye Loughman came the ballpark and meant business, driving in four on three hits to lead Vernon College Softball past Texas Glory FTW 13-1 on Saturday. Loughman drove in runs on a double in the first and a home run in the third.  The Chaps opened up scoring in the first inning and five runs in the third inning. Kassidy OutlawTaylor Poage, and Loughman powered the big inning with RBIs.  Laynie Bastow earned the victory in the circle surrendering one run on three hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking one. The Chaps had 12 hits in the game. Kim HierholzerLoughman, and Poage all collected multiple hits for the Chaps with Loughman and Hierholzer each collecting three hits to lead Vernon College Softball.

"It was refreshing to finally take the field for some live action and be able to give the town and fans some in person sports action after a very long summer," said Coach Talley of the Chaps play last week.  "We have a lot of work to do, but the numbers and level of play we are at only one week in to team practice, shows that we did our job recruiting and the girls are doing a great job of passing on the culture and standards we have for our program."
