Chaps Softball Earns Top-15 Ranking

VERNON, TX – The Vernon College softball team picked up it's first top-15 ranking of the season coming in at No. 12 in the 2021 NJCAA Softball preseason top 20 rankings.

This marks the first preseason top-12 ranking for Vernon College softball since the Coach Talley era began.

The Chaps finished the 2020 season with a 23-1 overall record and were ranked No. 17 in the nation when the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. OSU returns 4 of its top players, including Laynie Bastow, Adrianna Cooney, Stonie Carrillo and Kaila Eastburn.

Last year's squad boasted a .437 overall batting average that ranked second in the NJCAA, as well as a 2.43 earned run average that ranked 15th in the NCAA.

Along with the core lineup from a year ago, the Cowgirls welcome a pair of Division I transfers in Kianna Gibson (Nichols St) and Camile Nunez (Univ. Albama Birmingham), as well as 14 impressive freshmen for the 2021 season.

VC is joined by fellow Region 5 West school Howard College (8) in the NJCAA Softball rankings.
